I'm planning on tackling the fork oil change on a used 2018 R1200GS I picked up a few months back. The telelever front end is a bit different, and I want to make sure I'm not missing any specific quirks or common mistakes. For those who have done this on a newer model with the semi-active suspension, did you find any special tools were needed? Also, what weight oil did you use and how much? I'm debating between staying with the OEM recommended weight or going slightly thicker to firm it up a bit. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The R1200GS telelever needs normal fork tools, but it's a bit harder to get to. Use BMW's 5W fork oil, about 465ml for each side. If you've got a semi-active model, disconnect the battery first. For the ESA to work as it should, use the factory oil weight

OEM 7.5W is good, but 10W gives a firmer feel. You don't need special tools unless the seals are bad, just don't crank those fork caps too tight
yep, no need special tool, a simple hex key and a torque wrench are all you really need.
Just be careful with the drain plugs on the bottom of the fork tubes bcs they can strip easily.
As for the oil, I agree that OP should stick with the OEM 7.5W weight.
Going thicker will definitely firm up the ride, but it can mess with the semi active suspension's ability to react, which kind of defeats the purpose
