Reading fault codes

I just purchased a 2018 R1200GS and I have a question about reading fault codes. On my previous bikes, I could just short a couple of pins on the diagnostic connector to get a flash code. But is it true it's a bit more complex on these bikes? What's the easiest and most reliable way to read fault codes without going to a dealer every time? I've seen some talk about GS-911 and MotoScan, but I'm looking for the most straightforward option for a hobbyist mechanic. Also, once I get the code, are sites like https://bmwfault.codes/Lookup a reliable way to decipher them? Thanks for any advice!

Okay, it's a bit tricky. For full access, go with GS-911. If you want a cheaper setup, MotoScan with OBDLink LX works great. Either option is good for DIYers. And bmwfault.codes is your go-to for decoding.
