Need a cheaper fix for worn heated grips

2017 R1200RT, factory heated grips are showing their age, and the dealer quote is outrageous. Feels like there has to be a better way than paying that much. Is there a good aftermarket option?

Yeah, dealer prices are wild for stuff like that. I swapped mine out with some Oxford heated grips. They are way cheaper, work great, and the install wasn't bad at all. Best bet is to go for it too.

Thanks for the info on the Oxford grips! How did you wire them in on your bike? I'm wondering if they integrate with the factory wonder wheel controller or if you have to use the separate switch that comes in their kit.

If BMW riders are forced to pay luxury prices just to replace worn-out heated grips, isn't it fair to ask why premium bikes don't come with modular, user-serviceable components in the first place?

The million dollar question for sure! It would be nice if these parts were designed to be serviced more easily. For now, I'm just trying to find a functional workaround.

And if you're willing to pay a bit more than the Oxford, Koso Apollo has heated grips which are great, but you may need to install some additional components to make them work fully

Thanks for the heads up on the Koso Apollo grips. I looked into them and saw they use an integrated thumb switch with 5 heat levels and LED indicators, which is a nice touch. From what I can tell, they don't plug directly into the factory controller on the R1200RT, so you'd be running them as a standalone setup. That's not a dealbreaker, but I'd want to ensure they don't interfere with the CAN bus or cause any faults. Did you have to add a relay or tap into a specific circuit to keep them from drawing power when the bike's off? I'm still weighing my options, but if I go that route, I'll probably install it over the weekend and post about how it goes.
