BMW Boxer engine cam timing tips after break in

If you own an R1200 or R1250 WetHead or ShiftHead, its highly recommended to check both cam timing and valve clearances around the 10k-12k mile mark. Before that, everything's still breaking in, but once settled, adjustments at this stage can make a huge difference. After checking over 50 bikes, the vast majority needed minor cam timing tweaks and valve clearance adjustments to optimal specs (0.12mm intake, 0.36mm exhaust). Done right, this can improve starting, idle, throttle response and even fuel efficiency. Plus, the timing usually stays solid for the next 100k miles. Its a one time adjustment that pays off in longterm performance and ride quality.

Absolutely agree with this man, I've done the cam timing and valve checks right around that mileage on my R1250, and it really made a difference especially in throttle response and idle smoothness, it's crazy how many bikes actually need those small adjustments once the initial break in is done. Plus, knowing it should hold steady for another 100k miles is a huge relief if you ask me

See, that's the thing that's bothering me the most. Unless you're one of those casual riders that buy a brand new bmw and let it sit in your garage, you'll go through those 10k miles before the warranty ends, but I haven't heard anyone say that the dealership recommended the check the clearances.
