gauge cluster issues on 2016 R1200R

I'm helping my friend check his 2016 BMW R1200R tht has intermittent issues with the gauge cluster (speedo, tach, time, mileage, gear indicator, fuel, temp).

first, parts of the display were delayed in turning on, then the clock started losing time, and now the entire cluster often stays off while riding, though the bike itself runs fine.

I told my friend that it might be a loose wire or ground connection. I've checked wiring diagrams and am trying to pinpoint the problem.

Does anyone have similar experiences or troubleshooting advice before I told him to just take the bike to the dealer?

You're on the right track so make sure the groun dconection is clean and tight. Also, look for any loose plugs or corroded pins in the wiring to the cluster. If it's still acting up, it might be the cluster itself, but try all the electrical checks first before hitting the dealer.

A buddy of mine had the same with his 2017 R1200R and found out the wiring behind the gauge cluster had a loose connection, according to him he just re-secured it, and the problem went away.

If the wiring looks good, I'd suggest having a pro check it out before it potentially leads to more complex electrical problems down the road

That sounds like a classic problem related to voltage or grounding. I'd really recommend taking a close look at the battery terminals, the ground connections, and especially the main cluster connector. Sometimes, corrossion can sneak in there or you might find a pin that's just a bit loose. Oh, and don't forget,if the battery's weak, it can lead to some pretty quirky behavior from the cluster, even if the bike seems to run just fine. If everythin checks out there, running a quick diagnostic with a GS-911 could help pinpoint any issues before you have to make the trip to the dealer
